A few wooden artifacts, densely decorated with enigmatic figures, are
all that remains of what at one time was the writing system of Easter
Island. Ever since its discovery to the rest of the world in the 19th
century, this rongorongo has resisted all attempts at decipherment.
It is the intention of this book to show that it constitutes nothing
less than a fully developed script. And as such, its tiny glyphs stand
alongside the great moai statuses as a lasting monument of the
inventiveness and artistry of the people of that remote Pacific island.
